The Surf Life Savers from Milnerton used to do this route as a training run not only for Surf Ski but also in Surf Boats. The Dash was formalised about 12 years ago and has became known as the Wednesday DownWind Dash.  The event also attracts kite boarders and for the first time paddle boarders in 2008.
